Have you ever heard the term cockroach CEO in the startup scene? It's a well-known phrase in the U.S. In the past, VCs often dismissed these people, but in the tough economy this year, they’re proving to be the ones who were right all along.

What is Cockroach Mode?

The term was used back in 2017 during the era of high growth, often by VCs who looked down on startup CEOs that prioritized survival over scaling.

Key Traits of Cockroach Mode:

Minimizing Burn Rate: Drastically reduce expenses to maximize runway.

Focusing on the Essentials: Set only the three most critical goals and eliminate the rest (including drastically downsizing staff if necessary).

3.

Staying Hopeful: Never give up, even when failure seems inevitable. These CEOs are masters of survival, and they somehow remain standing even years later.

Earlier this year, a founder in the VC’s portfolio faced a dire situation: the company was on the brink of failure due to funding shortages and poor performance. The investor suggested an exit strategy through acquisition, but the founder refused and entered “cockroach mode.”

This founder cut the burn rate by two-thirds, stripped the company down to focus on three core goals, and let go of everything else. Despite the overwhelming odds, they never lost hope.

In the end, her persistence paid off. The company met its goals and successfully secured the next funding round.

Lessons Learned:

Listen to Investors, But Own the Final Decision: As the CEO, the buck stops with you. Investors don’t always have the right answer.

Be Relentlessly Resilient, Like a Cockroach: Cut everything down to the essentials and focus solely on what matters most.

3.

Survival Matters as Much as Growth: It’s not just about scaling; sometimes, staying alive is the real victory.

스타트업 씬에 있는 사람들중에 바퀴벌레 같은 대표라는 표현 들어본적 있나요? 미국에서는 유명한데, 예전에는 VC들이 이사람들을 무시했지만, 경제가 어려워진 올해, 이들이 옳다는것을 증명하고 있습니다. 바퀴벌레 모드란? 이 용어는 2017년 고성장 시대에 성장이 아닌 생존위주의 스타트업 대표들을 무시하는 VC들이 사용하던 단어였습니다.

소진율 최소화: 지출을 대폭 줄여 회사가 버틸 수 있는 시간을 최대화합니다. 핵심에 집중: 가장 중요한 목표 몇가지만 설정하고, 나머지는 과감히 제거합니다.(직원을 극단적으로 줄입니다) 희망 유지: 실패가 거의 확실해 보이는 상황에서도 끝까지 포기하지 않습니다. 이들은 생존의 대가입니다. 그리고 몇년이 지나도 계속 살아있죠.

이것은 샌프란에서 온 어떤 VC가 연말을 회고하면서 작성한 이야기를 번역 한것 입니다. 올해 초, 한 창업자는 자금 부족과 실적 부진으로 회사가 실패할 위기에 처했습니다. 투자자는 인재 인수를 통한 출구 전략을 제안했지만, 창업자는 이를 거부하고 "바퀴벌레 모드"에 돌입했습니다.

이 창업자는 소진율을 2/3로 줄이고, 3가지 핵심 목표만 남기며, 불필요한 요소는 모두 포기했습니다. 수학적으로 실패가 확실해 보이는 상황에서도 희망을 놓지 않았습니다.

결국 그녀의 결정은 성공으로 이어졌고, 회사는 목표를 달성하며 다음 라운드 진행에 성공했습니다.

교훈: 투자자의 조언을 듣되, 최종 결정은 CEO인 당신의 몫입니다. 투자자가 항상 옳은게 아닙니다. 바퀴벌레처럼 끈질기게 버텨라: 필요하다면 모든 것을 줄이고 핵심에만 집중하세요. 성장도 중요하지만, 생존도 중요합니다.

최근에 핫한 직업인 생성형 AI엔지니어의 트렌드에 대해서 적어보고자 합니다. 인도 천재인 친구인데 인터뷰를 작년에 빅테크들 다 보고, OpenAI나 엔트로픽도 보고 잘나가는 친구와 나눈 대화를 정리해봤습니다.

단순히 '무엇을' 했는지에 집중하지 말고, '왜' 했는지를 먼저 설명해야 합니다.

많은 사람들이 프로젝트에서 '무엇을' 했는지에 대해서는 잘 설명하지만, '왜' 그 선택을 했는지는 간과하는 경우가 많습니다.

Gen AI는 머신러닝과 매우 유사하며, 결과보다는 프로세스 중심으로 평가됩니다. 특히나 Individual contributor 일 경우에는 프로세스에 대한 이해도가 중요합니다.
